Education outreach
My principal outreach component, in addition to academic service, is as Science and Education Director for the Americas for Conservation and the Arts (AFC+A). We partner with forward thinking NGOs and governmental agencies to enhance their reach and actualize their initiatives. In addition, we leverage Latino advocates to inspire stewardship of our natural resources, promote conservation, and engage the arts. Here I bring scientific expertise and network with scientific leaders to partner with AFC+A’s mission and the annual Americas Latino Eco-Festival. We hope to become a leading voice in conservation of natural resources and arts for diverse cultures in the USA and abroad. We currently affiliate with agencies including: the US Forest Service, the US Division of Natural Resources, the Audubon Society, the Nature Conservancy, the World Wildlife Federation, and the National Wildlife Foundation. My involvement working with NGOs has taught me how to effectively find commonalities and overlap institutional missions. For example, through AFC+A I am leading a BioBlitz event targeted towards 4th graders from primarily Hispanic inter-city school districts. We provide an English/ Spanish ‘Activities Day’ to survey for biological diversity in Denver parks.
